Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Can Affect Every Aspect of Your Life

Let’s Find a Solution

Urinary Incontinence

Most men will experience urinary incontinence after the removal of the prostate. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that is located under the bladder through which the urethra runs. After it is removed, the urethra loses some of the passive support from the prostate. Studies show that learning to correctly contract the pelvic floor muscles under the supervision of a trained pelvic floor physical therapist before surgery results in less leakage and improved recovery times. Therapy can also help reduce or eliminate leakage after surgery.

Chronic Pelvic Pain

Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome or Chronic Prostatitis is defined as long term pain in the pelvic region and urinary symptoms without evidence of bacterial infection. It accounts for about 90% of prostatitis diagnoses. Pain may present in the penis, testicles, perineum, bladder, pubic bone or rectum and 56% of men with CPPS have ejaculatory pain. Oftentimes, CPPS is the result of chronic, unconscious contraction of the pelvic floor muscles.

Studies have shown that trigger point therapy can improve pain, urinary, and quality of life symptoms associated with CPPS. A trained pelvic floor therapist can help you regain control of these muscles to reduce pain and improve function!

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction, complete or partial, can be caused by the result of psychological problems, or deficiencies with the nervous or vascular systems. It is the result of decreased blood volume within the penis. There are two ways in which pelvic floor therapy can help reduce erectile dysfunction. Contraction of the pelvic floor muscles, in particular, the bulbospongiosus, blocks the flow of blood from escaping the penis by pressing on the dorsal vein of the penis. Overactive, or hypertonic, pelvic floor muscles can created decreased expansion of the root of the penis which results in decreased rigidity. A trained pelvic floor therapist can help you train your muscles for improvements in both strength and relaxation!
